A one-minute shift

One Bed Left

It’s 4 PM. Five people in the waiting room, time for three before close. Read the charts, mind the memo, pick who gets seen.

How it plays

One shift, four jobs

  1. 01

    Triage

Twelve people come through the door between 8 and 6. The nurse tags them red, yellow or green, but tags miss quiet heart attacks and low sugars. Leave a serious patient too long and they turn critical.

  2. 02

    Examine

Order an exam, SpO2, glucose, an ECG or an X-ray. Every test costs clock minutes you could spend on the next patient. Read the chart: low sugar and high sugar, sprains and fractures, panic and heart attacks look alike.

  3. 03

    Verify

Check the photo ID against the face and today’s date. Read the patient record: plan, balance, allergies, and the occasional fraud alert.

  4. 04

    Decide

Treat, send home, or flag for Compliance, then sign the chart. Halvorsen’s policy changes every morning, and it doesn’t always agree with medicine.

The catch

The patient the policy says to send home is often the one who needs you. Treat them anyway and they live, but Compliance pulls about half of those charts. Write-ups cost money, the bills at home keep coming, and burnout climbs with every patient you lose. At the end of 14 shifts, the game remembers which kind of doctor you were.

Questions

About Clinic Nine

What is Clinic Nine?

Clinic Nine is a single-player game about the pressures on doctors, made by Takiko Games. You are the doctor at a Halvorsen Health urgent care for 14 shifts. Twelve patients arrive each shift and there is time for about nine, so you decide who is seen, what is wrong with them, and whether to follow the insurance company’s policy.

Is Clinic Nine free?

Yes. Clinic Nine is in open playtest and free to play in a desktop web browser on itch.io. There is nothing to install.

Is Clinic Nine like Papers, Please?

It shares the cross-checking of documents, a rulebook that changes every day, money and family at home, and the moral cost of following orders. The rest is different: a present-day clinic instead of a border, a waiting room you triage instead of a queue, tests that cost time, and treatment decisions where the policy and the medicine can disagree.

What happens if I break the policy?

Treating a patient the policy says to send home saves them, but about half of those charts get pulled by Compliance and you get a write-up. Write-ups cost money, and money keeps your household going. A wrong treatment is a medical error whatever the policy says.

How long is Clinic Nine?

One run is 14 shifts, each a working day from 8 AM to 6 PM with an evening at home in between. Your choices lead to one of several endings.

Is the medicine in Clinic Nine accurate?

It is plausible but stylised: real patterns with invented thresholds, no doses and no brand-name drugs. The game never teaches a pattern that contradicts its own clinical guide, but it is not medical advice. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

Is Clinic Nine hard?

The first shift is a guided orientation, and the clinic adds conditions and tests over the first five days. Resident mode slows the clock, calms the waiting room and explains every mistake.

Your first shift starts at 8.

It’s an early playtest and rough in places. Play it, then tell us what to fix at chris@nohall.dev.
